Beverly Healthcare Hagerstown educates on pain
May 9, 2005

Hagerstown, Md.

In honor of National Nursing Home Week, Sunday, May 8, through Saturday, May 14, Beverly Healthcare Hagerstown has incorporated resident and associate education regarding the assessment and management of pain into the week's activities.

The pain collaborative is a corporatewide approach to improve the quality of life for the residents. The theme chosen by Beverly Healthcare Hagerstown is "The Pain Plane--Destination: Fantasy Island." The goal of the program is for all residents to be assessed for symptoms of pain and that they be 100 percent pain-free.

Traditionally medication is used to control pain; however, with this approach other modalities can be explored.

The facility also will conduct Pain Plane-related activities. These include in-depth instruction of associates and residents regarding monitoring of pain levels and responses to interventions. Also during this time, residents will be treated to travel-like activities, tours and “Air-Pain Jeopardy.” The activities of the week will conclude with the arrival to "Fantasy Island," where decorations and food will create an island-like experience for residents and their guests.
